The Bible holds the title of the best-selling book of all time, a record recognized by the Guinness World Records. Within its pages are enriching and captivating stories that impart valuable lessons to people of all ages. Despite it being well-known, many people don’t study the Bible deeply.
To understand why this happens, let’s find out why people may not fully engage in a thorough study of the Bible.
1. Not a Priority
It is commonly observed that people tend to prioritize what they understand and what benefits them. Nowadays, money and relationships often take precedence as they fulfill not just our basic needs but also our higher-level desires. However, many people fail to recognize the practical advantages of the Bible and choose to prioritize other things. Truly, what we invest most of our time in gradually shapes our identity and captures our hearts (Matt 6:21).
God encourages us to entrust our plans to Him, assuring us that He will establish them (Prov 16:3). By devoting our lives to Him, we are promised a meaningful life guided in the right direction. Through consistent prayer and thorough Bible study, God connects with us even in our darkest moments (Matt 6:34).
Given that a healthy relationship with God is the very purpose of our existence, it’s only fitting that we invest most of our time and effort into nurturing this essential bond.
2. Not Interesting
Studying the Bible can be enjoyable when exploring specific stories, but tackling the entire book can be daunting for many. The Bible addresses topics like violence and sexual immorality, and its use of figurative language can make it challenging for readers to maintain interest. Even the disciples struggled to fully comprehend Jesus’ teachings while He was fulfilling the promises in the Bible during his first coming (Luke 18:34). Nevertheless, they remained obedient to Jesus because He held the Words of eternal life (John 6:68).
If we firmly believe that God communicates with us through the Bible, God will certainly reveal His words to us and grant understanding to those who are openhearted. (Ps 119:130). To achieve this, we must discern what is right and strive to learn together for the greater good (Job 34:4).
As the Word comes to life, the Bible transforms into an incredibly hopeful and enlightening book, brimming with God’s unwavering promises. This hope will not only keep us hooked but will also inspire us to actively engage in God’s work.
3. Being a Good Person is Enough
The lack of interest and knowledge in the Bible often leads individuals to believe that as long as we try to be kind and don’t harm others, God is already pleased. But if the 10 commandments are all there is, why is the Bible so extensive?
The Bible shows God’s objective standard of good and evil. As we navigate through the subjective standards of the world, we must remain vigilant in order to shield ourselves from spiritual dangers that distort the Truth (1 John 4:1). Without a deep understanding of the Word, it is possible to be influenced by evil without even realizing it. Just as God hopes, we should strive to be like the Berean Jews, dedicated to the study of the Bible every day, using it as a shield against falsehood and deceit (Acts 17:11).
4. Doubtful of the Reliability of the Bible
Even among Christians, there are doubts about the reliability of the Bible. Some question whether certain parts were omitted, while others wonder if all the writers were truly inspired by God. Furthermore, discrepancies from historical and factual studies have fueled many arguments. As a result, many individuals avoid reading the Bible because they fear it may only offer false hope.
However, it’s crucial to remember that God is omnipotent and omniscient (Job 42:2). He does not act without revealing His plans to His servants the prophets (Amos 3:7). His purposes will prevail, regardless of the intentions of men (Prov 19:21). While people may distort the truth and mislead others, the hope He instills in true believers will endure as long as they remain in His embrace.
In His time, Jesus served as clear evidence that the Bible is factual. He demonstrated this by embodying the Word in the flesh (John 1:14). Through Him, the promises in the law and the prophets were fulfilled according to God’s will (Luke 24:44).
5. Requires Commitment and Discipline
Many people who express interest in learning the Bible often find themselves getting derailed along the way. This may be due to unexpected opportunities that arise, making it difficult to commit fully, or it could be attributed to a lack of discipline and focus. When our enthusiasm for God diminishes, it creates an opening for negativity to steer us toward worldly pursuits, as the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit (Gal 5:17).
However, God reminds us to stand firm in our faith (1 Cor 16:13) and assures us that He will fight on our behalf as long as we remain in Him, and He in us (John 15:7; Ex 14:14). In order to overcome the temptations of the world, we must wholeheartedly love the Lord, learning His love language through the Bible and demonstrating what we’ve learned through our actions (Jas 2:17; 1 John 3:18).
6. Different Biblical Teachings are Confusing
When we delve deep into the Scriptures, it’s common to feel overwhelmed and confused by the various teachings within Christianity. But shouldn’t be an excuse to avoid reading the divine book.
Every day presents a choice, and God desires us to choose Him in order to triumph (Dt 30:19). To ensure we are embracing the Truth, we must personally study the Bible, distinguish right from wrong, and not solely depend on our spiritual leaders’ wisdom. We hold responsibility for our spiritual destiny. The Bible warns against believing every spirit but urges us to test them to discern their origin (1 John 4:1), as many false prophets have emerged into the world. In our intricate spiritual journey, God encourages us to persevere, seeking and ultimately discovering the Truth through our determination.
7. Affected by the Shortcomings of the Congregation
We all have our imperfections, even those who have dedicated their lives to their faith, like pastors and church leaders. But as children of God, it’s crucial for them to live out their teachings in their daily lives, continuously striving to better themselves and serve as examples to lead others nearer to God.
When we witness these supposedly devout individuals falter, it’s natural to question the influence of their faith in their lives and their dedication to studying the Bible.
People make mistakes, but God’s ways are always perfect (Dt 32:4). Relying solely on others for our faith would be like prioritizing humans over God. God will judge everyone for their mistakes. Instead of fixating on the sins of others, it’s best to focus on strengthening our own faith and being careful not to stumble ourselves or lead others astray.
8. Bound by Religious Practices and Traditions
As devout Christians, many of us hold firmly to the religious practices passed down by our parents and ancestors. It is important to acknowledge that simply going through the motions of rituals, services, and observances may not encompass the most essential aspect of our faith—engaging in an in-depth study of the Scriptures.
We are reminded in the Scriptures how God despised religious festivals or assemblies that were based on human perceptions of what would please God rather than focusing on His desires (Isa 1:11-15, Amos 5:21-23). People were acting independently and disregarding God’s instructions. John 1:8 emphasizes the importance of meditating on the Bible, day and night so that we may carefully follow everything written in it.
To ensure that our service and offerings are truly acceptable to God, our first step should be to comprehend His desires for us by understanding His Word. Through this understanding, we can then fulfill His will.
9. Only for the aspiring preachers
Many people mistakenly believe that delving deeply into the Bible is only for those pursuing a theology degree. But who sets this standard? It is of the world, not of God. He called us to seek the truth and contribute to His kingdom. We must nurture our faith and endeavor to be loyal believers, aiming to please God with our loyalty.
Instead of coming up with excuses, it’s time to focus on learning. Rather than labeling it as difficult, let’s break it down into manageable steps. Life presents numerous opportunities, but God gives the gift of eternal life and Salvation freely to those who seek Him.
Conclusion
Having questions about life is natural, but sometimes we choose to ignore them to avoid making things even more complicated. We might worry that seeking the truth will not provide the comfort we desire or change anything. Thus, we do not feel the need to ask for more.
Regardless of our feelings and thoughts about life, God’s promises are incredible. “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor. 2:9). As God fulfills His promises, He continually invites everyone to understand His will so we can participate in His work.
